Who am I? If you have read my blog already, then you mknow that I am an American Jew, married to a Shanghainese woman, having visited China three times, studying Chinese for five years, currently living in the SF/Silicon Valley.
I understand that the American media is treating China badly; I know that the media has used blantantly wrong pictures, that the media does not have anyone actually in China to see what's going on, and that the media really does not understand Chinese history.
What about me? My Chinese name is Deng Shouxin and I believe in Deng Xiaoping's idea of opening up China.
After the 1980s, China developed and the Chinese life improved. With China a developing economy, China today owns a lot of American debt. I've seen Xiamen, Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou develop, seeing Shanghai build huge skyscrapers, giving the Chinese the ability to buy modern necessities and thus a modern life. I understand, and I support China's economnic policies.
What am I like? Everyday I listen to chinese mustic, often singing to them (usually badly).
In 2003 when I first to china, (remember I am not an ordinary foreigner--they didn't like to have fun with Chinese people or to really understand China with Chinese people) I, by myself, went around Shanghai, went by myself to the English corners to speak Chinese and chat (remember though my Chinese was not very good). Of course, I cannot understand everything, but I will ask why the Chinese did something, and answered when asked by the Chinese (I did not vote for Bush!) When SAR.S came around, I did not flee back to China, in fact I stayed in Shanghai to continue studying Chinese. Why? I loved China, I loved Shanghai, I loved the Chinese people, and I loved the Chinese culture.
What am I about? When I graduated high school, I already knew I wanted to learn about Chinese history, its ancient culture, it's modern culture, the language, the people, and music.
When I went to Beijing, everything I studied became an actual experience. I went to the Forbidden City, I saw living history, when I went to the Great Wall, I felt my life's fulfillment.
So, just who am I? Possibly a China hand? Most likely just a friend to you.
Still, you should realize that China has entered into the WTO and thereby the international system. When China's government does something, everybody is now watching. You can no longer go shouting about staying out of China's internal affairs! Every action now has a reaction. Look, China has a lot of the American debt, so when China re-values its currency, it affects the US. If the US pays its farmers so they can grow and sell rice, it prevents Chinese farmers from selling their rice cheaply. Welcome to globalization.
What do I know? I have a Bachelor's in International Affairs and a Master's in Pacific International Affairs.
If you can no longer tell people to butt out of China's internal affairs, what to do? Start learning international history, American history, study what they have done. Is an American complaining about China's IPR? Tell them America stole British IPR in order to modernize. Is an American complaining about China cutting down its forests? Tell the American that the US did the same thing in the 1800s. Don't yell at them, explain to them why they are wrong.
Just what am I? I am an independent person and I realize that no one, not even governments are perfect.
Love your country, but don't fall for nationalism. If you treat someone even a little badly, even though you do a lot of nice things, that person will only remember what you did bad. Politics is the same way (eg: US and Iraq). Look, English is the lingua franca, and a lot of American read English, so when the Chinese media translates into English, they need to study international diplomacy and diplomatically say things. Currently they write and translate cruelly, and thus you will continue to have many foreigners thinking badly of the Chinese government.
Remember, just what kind of person I am? I've studied China (perhaps not enough), but I already love China and support it, so ask yourself, how would you convince another foreigner to think the same way?
